As our population has grown and changed over time, so has our program focus. The mission of providing cost-free cancer support to anyone living with any type of cancer remains strong. But the specific activities change with time. This should be expected as more people are living beyond cancer, research shows us how to take better care of ourselves, and the public becomes more knowledgeable about the benefits of balancing medical and psychosocial care.
For instance, our education lectures have expanded beyond focusing mostly on new medical research and treatments. While these topics remain important (and are still featured at times), we’ve learned our members find other topics valuable, including nutrition, managing the costs related to cancer care, balancing cancer as a caregiver, transitioning to life after treatment. It’s of course not always easy to meet the needs of a large community, often times with hundreds of people with differing needs. But we keep listening and trying.
The program staff is always evaluating our current line up of groups and workshops, monitoring not just attendance but also feedback from members. So the staff is excited to announce a list of new support groups and workshops that will help us continue to focus on our mission of providing support to anyone touched by any type of cancer.
