Gilda's Club Metro Detroit is a free, non-residential cancer support community in Royal Oak founded
by eight committed women
whose lives were touched by cancer. The
signature "red door" to our beautifully restored clubhouse opened in
1998.
Gilda's Legacy
Gilda's Club is named in honor of the late comedian and former
Detroiter Gilda Radner. Her dream was to create places where people
living with cancer and their families and friends could gather to
support one another and celebrate life. The dream found fulfillment
with the opening of Gilda's Club New York City in 1995. Since that
time, Gilda's Clubs have been opening around North America.
Mission
To create a community where men, women and children with all types
of cancer and their families and friends can enhance the quality of
their lives through support, networking and education.
Goal
To provide a home-like meeting place and free program where anyone
living with cancer can: build friendships, share the collective
wisdom of experience, and develop strategies for living with cancer.
Philosophy
Emotional and social support are as essential as medical care when
cancer is in the family, not only for those living with cancer but
also for their families and friends. Support received by joining
with others who are also living with cancer enables people to live
their lives to the fullest, no matter the outcome. No one should
ever have to face cancer alone.
Membership
The Gilda's Club program is free of charge. Call and inquire about
weekly New Member Meetings that include an overview of the program
and a tour of the clubhouse. Meetings take place every Wednesday and
Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Once you become a member, you will receive a
monthly calendar that lists all program activities.
