Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit is a free social and emotional cancer support community for men, women and
children with all types of cancer and their families and friends. Gilda’s Club is the legacy of comedian and
former Detroiter, Gilda Radner, who is best known for her work on “Saturday Night Live.”
A Cancer Support Community
Gilda’s Club offers emotional and social support as a supplement to medical treatment. Members meet and share a
collective wisdom, which Gilda says helped her regain control of her life and reclaim her gift for laughter.
Membership
The Gilda’s Club program is free of charge, offering new member meetings weekly. This is an opportunity for interested
people to learn more about Gilda’s Club and tour the clubhouse. To receive a brochure and a current monthly calendar
listing new member meetings, call (248) 577-0800.
The Gilda’s Club Program
Gilda’s Club offers weekly wellness groups for anyone living with any type of cancer and weekly family groups for family
members and friends. Weekly workshops include art, meditation, guided imagery, creative writing, yoga and much more.
Monthly networking groups offer supper/lectures and social events. Gilda’s Club has a Kids Club and Teen Club, and provides
supervised childcare while adults attend groups. A library with resource information and Internet access is available
for members.
Gilda’s Club Worldwide
Gilda Radner envisioned a community support group for people touched by cancer – a home-like setting that provided
support, resources and laughter. After her death in 1989 from ovarian cancer, her husband, Gene Wilder, medical therapist,
Joanna Bull, and a group of friends carried out her wish. The first Gilda’s Club opened in New York City in 1995.
There are now more than 20 Gilda’s Club affiliates throughout the United States and Canada.
The Beginning of Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit
Eight local women, all of whom were affected by cancer, founded Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit in 1993. The Club has
a 23-member board of directors.
The Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit clubhouse opened on January 28, 1998. There are more than 5,000 members. The original,
three-story clubhouse was built in 1913 from plans ordered from a Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog. A 2004 addition
increased the clubhouse to 9,500 square feet, adding program rooms, offices, an art room and expanded kitchen.
Donations and Fundraising
Gilda’s Club is funded through individual donations, special fundraising events, corporate support, and foundations.
Donations are used to provide a cost-free social and emotional support community for people with cancer, their families
and friends. Gilda’s Club is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization. Donations are tax deductible to the extent provided
by the law.
Two major fundraising events are the annual Gilda’s Club Walk held in September and Gilda’s Big Night Out in May.
In addition, many community businesses hold charity events throughout the year and donate funds to Gilda’s Club.
