Welcome to Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit. We are happy that you are here. Now take a deep breath, let it out and know that you are not alone.

Chances are that you came to us because your life has been impacted by one of the many types of cancer. Whether it be your own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one – a child, a spouse, a parent, a grandparent, a friend, a neighbor, a co-worker – we want you to know that we are here to provide tools and resources to help you on this journey, wherever the path may lead.

We do not treat disease. We do, however, offer a program of emotional and social support that recent studies report are an essential benefit to overall well-being for people faced with cancer. Our mission is to provide meeting places where men, women and children living with cancer, along with their families and friends, can join with others to build a personal network of social and emotional support as an integral part of cancer treatment. Free of charge and non-profit, Gilda's Club offers support and networking groups, seminars, workshops, specialized children's programs and social events in a nonresidential and home-like setting. Funding is solicited from private individuals, corporations and foundations.

If you are ready to learn more about us, call 248-577-0800. Better yet, stop by for a visit. Our red door is open, the coffee's on, the hugs and everything else you participate in here is free.

ABOUT GILDA

The world knew her as Rosanne Rosanneadanna, Emily Litella and Lisa Loopner. We remember her for the phrases she created with writer Alan Zweibel,  such as "Never mind!" and "It's always something." As one of the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players" featured in the original cast of the groundbreaking Saturday Night Live, Gilda Radner charmed us and made us laugh.

Gilda, a native of Detroit, is remembered in a special way by family and friends. Many knew about her dog, Sparkle, an "attendant" at her own wedding to Gene Wilder. A special few remember her dog, Inky, invading the campus of Gesu School near her Wildemere home and rescued by the Mother Superior. Some remember Gilda from Hampton grade school, Mumford High School, as vice-president of her senior class at Liggett School or from drama class at the University of Michigan. But not everyone knew she played another role, a part she called "The Invisible Cancer Woman" in the saga of "The Adventures of the Independent Baldheaded Chemo Patient." She wrote about this and other experiences living with cancer in her book, "It's Always Something."

Gilda was diagnosed with ovarian cancer on October 21, 1986 and died at the age of 42 on May 20, 1989. Her legacy is the pantheon of her comedic characters, her films with her husband, Gene Wilder, and her work on Broadway, including "Gilda Radner: Live from New York." Another lasting gift is her inspiration for Gilda's Club, a free cancer support community. Gilda was part of a cancer support community after her diagnosis, and her dream was that anyone dealing with cancer would be able to receive the kind of support she found there. In response to her wishes, Joanna Bull, her cancer therapist, and Gene Wilder began Gilda's Club. The first Gilda's Club opened in New York City in June 1995. Currently, there are 22 Gilda's Clubs open, with 9 more in development in the United States and Canada.
